Karma

They asked me to talk about karma

(man)…

Are they for real?

(I thought)

My name’s not Neil.

But here’s the deal

First, let’s get one thing straight, (mate).

I’m not a expert, yogi, guru, zen master,

Tibetan lama or intellectual potentate

I’m just a bloke

who likes a laugh and a joke

and with a twinkle in my eye

I’ll give it a go.

have a try

take a risk. Do or die

and explain the Law of Karma. I suppose.

So here goes.

Karma

is the Now you made in the Past

(and the future that comes up way too fast)

the Future you’re making Now –

Yes. Right Now.

Second by second.

(Three thousand possibilities in every moment,

so it’s reckoned)

It’s those forgotten actions that became mysteries

embedded deep within our personal histories.

It’s every thought, word and deed we make

And even if you cross your fingers,

The Law of Karma makes no mistakes

There’s no escape.

Karma is when you find yourself doing the same thing

You did before

In a different time, but a similar situation

Which causes you another choice

Of frustration. Or elation

When you feel an attraction

To a particular course of action

Or reaction

Does that explain it to your satisfaction?

No?

I’ll try some more.

Karma is the cap that fits

That you wore before

The personal style

That makes you smile

Or frown

Karma lifts you up

Or brings you down

Karma is everything

The pattern of interconnectedness

The result of virtuous acts

or mindless recklessness

the endless cycle of cause and effect

the way we determined what happens next

it’s the echoes of our past choice

given voice

(metaphorically speaking)

it’s the shape of our essential soul

and proof of our ultimate control

over the choices we make

every good one and every mistake

we carry the seeds

looking for rain

so we can watch them bloom again

and experience joy or pain

is that quite plain?

But in itself karma is neither good nor bad

Happy or sad

Sensible or mad

It’s up to us Now

to decide our attitude

moaning and complaining

or expressing our gratitude

- for the chance to change

Is that so strange?

Karma. There you go

The harvest you reap and the seed you sow.

So now you know.
