The Hierophant

The Pope

This card by name alone represents a spiritual guide and guardian. A person who protects our soul and brings peace and wisdom.

Don’t be fooled by the pictorial images of wizened old bloke with beard, quite often the Hierophant describes a female spiritual guide or guardian, no jokes about bearded ladies please!

This card traditionally represents higher wisdom, sound advice and guidance.

For me it also represents a person who the questioner would have known during their lifetime, who has now passed over to spirit, who they measure their own life against "What would they do in this situation?" "How would they feel and what would they tell me right now?" and normally the connection with this person can be felt and the message from them given. Mostly I feel a deep love bond and a huge sense of pride coming from spirit when I see this card.

Also look to the cards around the Hierophant to find out why he/she is here. Are the cards just before relating to a stressful period? If so the Hierophant may be reassurance that we are NOT alone in these times and that we ARE doing the right thing.

If there is no apparent trigger for the appearance of the Hierophant, you often find that he/she comes closer and can be felt around by the questioner themselves at this time. Triggered by a close contact time such as their birthday, day of passing, the birthday of the questioner themselves or to celebrate with the questioner a current event like a wedding or birth of a child into the family. In the latter two cases the surrounding cards should back this up with a celebration of love showing clearly.

Overall when we walk our path with the Hierophant we are in good company. Our inner wisdom seems more profound under his/her influence and we begin to understand that to be spiritual whilst in physical existence does not mean we have to stop our human emotions, rather explore them.

In order to be spiritual and to be seen as spiritual we accept balance and not fight it.
