The Lovers

The Lovers is traditionally seen as a card of love, and in many instances can be talking about just that, but squeaky bedsprings aside, there is a lot more to this card than first meets the eye.

Often this card displays two lovers in passionate embrace, but frequently upon closer inspection one seems a little distant from the relationship, perhaps a little aloof or preoccupied with other matters. Sometimes as in the Mythic deck it is shown as a man choosing between three women, which one will be the best partner for him?

So we come to some alternative interpretations of the card.

Decisions that have to be made in love. What is good for me, and what is good for the people around me whom I love and care about?

This decision is purely for the questioner to make; perhaps they are feeling uncomfortable in their relationship. Perhaps they are looking for happiness in a different area of their lives and need to know that if they make the decision to pursue this goal that their loved ones will be happy and not put out by it. The surrounding cards will sometimes shed a little light on the issue at hand, but don’t expect to see the answer there, that is for the questioner alone to discover once he/she has weighed up the pros and cons.

Needless to say sometimes it can be the classical decision of which partner is the right one to be with.

I am always saying; "Relationships are like busses, you wait for hours for one to come. Just as you say to yourself I have waited long enough, no bus is going to come, I will walk. Three busses come along at once and you are in such a rush you don’t know which one to get on".

The cards following this decision should show the compatibility of the match chosen, but just like life only time will tell if the relationship will work long term.

So remember when you see the Lovers, it isn’t just about sex, love and sausage rolls. It can be about important decisions that need to be made by the questioner alone, taking everyone else’s needs and feelings into account.
