The "New" Fraudulent Mediums ActMuch of the talk on this has come from the campaign to clear Helen Duncan, the wartime medium prosecuted as fraudulent, because the authorities claimed afterwards they were worried she may reveal the timing of the D Day landings. But she could not reveal this info if she was a fraud, only if she was genuine, so the governments own case is immediately extinguished.
It was Churchill’s astrologers who came up with the 6-6-44 date for the D Day landings., not spirit mediums.
“First lets kill all the lawyers” Shakespeare; During Tony Blair’s ten years in office, we had almost one law change each day, great for his wife's law firm Matrix Chambers, and their nice fat bank accounts in the Caymen islands, and one of the main changes to the law is the extension of the stringent anti-racism legislation, which covers religious discrimination. The present worry over the recent changes in the law, is the change in emphasis for the medium to now have to prove themselves genuine. A quick internet search shows psychics and mediums by the shed load all offering their services, a case last year in the British courts with a fake medium called “angel cloud chakra bunny” turned out to be a family of 6 all taking turns on a psychic telephone hotline giving useless advice to anxious people. So the situation did need sorting as all these people cant be genuine, and they are not, clamping down in some way was long overdue.
The training of a psychic or medium is long and arduous. The Human rights act, section 13- freedom of thought, conscience and religion, covers freedom to worship, and section 12 covers freedom of expression. Spiritualism is a world-registered religion, and arguably all other religions are based on spiritual contact, so as giving spirit messages is an integral part of this religion, this is only an expression of faith, but some mediums work with cards and other implements, but as long as they are using these as tools of worship, we have little to fear, and a lot to gain, from weeding out the fraudsters.
Both the Jehovah Witness’s and the Evangelicals promised to go for some big scalps as soon as the law was changed, but recent cases involving discrimination against any religious bodies, have used the term “hate crime “ and we have protective coverage under this legislation. Remember “Freedom to express in the way we worship” , This includes pagans witches spiritualists and even the tree worshippers.
The law was there previously, its just that the police would not apply it, I spoke with the M.P Henry Bellingham, over the huge number of complaints, registered with the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Office of Fair Trading on scam phone lines, internet fakes, pyramid mail-shots, postal threats and psychic type demands, curse removals, Jesus tokens and, the send me and angel to watch over me for 50 quid hoaxes, and these were already covered in the 1976 sale of good act, whereby if you pay for a service that is not as advertised, you are entitled by law to your money back, and this applies also to psychic readings, the catchphrase to remember is; “Not fit for purpose”.
It is only by the first test case in the recent law changes, that we see how this law is interpreted.
Time will tell.
