Basic Guide to TarotPlease bear in mind that these are my personal interpretations of the cards, and therefore may not correspond with your own, or with various books you may have read. As a basic rule of thumb, go with what feels right for you at the time of reading. A more in depth look at each Major Arcana card can be found by clicking on the name of the card.
Major Arcana.The Fool. Enthusiasm, optimism, going into inexperienced areas, release and freedom, R. Fear of unknown, withdrawal.
The Magician. Outward confidence, adept use of skills. Ability and adaptation. R. Lack of confidence, clumsiness.
The Empress. Earth mother type, cool, calm and collected. Kind tolerant and confident, gentle yet strong. R. Controlling, and dominating woman.
The Emperor. Strong Male. Father or Husband figure. Set in ways, Independent, Dominating but guiding. R. Weak man, obsessive and intolerant.
High Priestess. Opening up to your spirituality. Knowledge, Intuition. Distance from emotion. R. Suppressing intuition, denial.
The Hierophant. Blessing from a wise one, alive or dead. Wisdom received, Knowledge. R. Feelings of loss or loneliness.
The Lovers. Decision to be made in love, love, joy, happiness, family balance. R. Feeling of betrayal, disappointment.
The Chariot. Movement, control. New horizons, being in charge of direction. R. Swept along by tide, lack of control.
Justice. Legal decision in ones favour, contracts signed, binding decisions made. R. Unfair decision. Legal red tape.
Temperance. Patience, calm overcoming obstacles, deliberation, practiced relaxation. R. Lack of patience, intolerance.
Strength. Strength, determination, ability to achieve ones goals, mind over matter. R. Weariness, lack of conviction.
The Hermit. Time alone chosen for clarity. Wisdom from contemplation. Solitude. R. Loneliness, isolation, fear.
The Wheel. Changes, Time for movement, inevitable conclusion, change. R. Inability to move forward. Static situation.
Hanged Man. Impatience, opportunities ahead just out of grasp, nearing major changes. R. Unlikely movement. Stagnant.
Death. Spring cleaning! Movement clearing out old to start new. End of old situation. R. Continuation of problem. Need for change.
The Devil. Subservience to another's will. Living a lie. Intolerance. Hatred of oneself and others. R. Domination fear.
The Tower. Unexpected event which shakes world and faith, shock, pain. R. Guilt and shame because of own behaviour
The Star. Optimism, bright prospects, blessings, hope, joy, happiness. R. Need for optimism, reality, easing of situation.
The Moon. Psychic abilities, inner balance, false friends, shady dealings. R. Inability to see whole picture. Deception.
The Sun. Joy, Happiness, Love, Abundance, Contentment. Satisfaction. Fulfilment. R. Something missing from life.
Judgment. Time to reflect and judge oneself balance foresight harmony. R. unfair attitudes, lack of balance, intolerance.
The World. Completion. Real joy in all areas of life, balance, happiness, contentment. R. minor upset in harmony.
Minor Arcana.
Ace Swords. Taking up new challenges, drive and ambition, determination. R. Fear of change, timidity. Lack of confidence.
2 of Swords. Stalemate situation. 2 alike people at loggerheads. Partnership. R. Inflexible attitudes destroying partnership.
3 of Swords. Worry and concern over a third party. Lack of information. R. Negative influence of a third party. Excessive concern.
4 of Swords. Rest and recovery time, regaining strength and confidence. R. No time to oneself, prolonged illness, stress.
5 of Swords. Tendency to take on too much, reality needs to be faced. R. Overburdening oneself ignoring warnings.
6 of Swords. Spiritual journey beginning. Finding ones inner self. R. Shutting out spiritual influences, closing down.
7 of Swords. Deception. Ability to underplay problems and minimize them. R. Problems escalating. Lies and Deception.
8 of Swords. Inability to act through fear of consequences. Tying oneself up. R. Belligerence, continuing along path blinkered by ego.
9 of Swords. Final obstacle to overcome. Conflicting advice and influence. R. Shutting out others opinions. Need for solitude and balance.
10 of Swords. Feeling let down or stabbed in the back, overburdened with problems. R. Self reliance. Single-minded strength to see a situation through.
Page of Swords. Child in age of innocence who is full of drive and determination. New opportunities for self fulfilment on the horizon. R. Concern about new health issue. Lack of energy or drive.
Knight of Swords. Rescuer, someone who makes you feel positive and uplifted, the knight is always full of energy and passion, but like all rescuers never stays still for long! An opportunity to broaden your horizons and develop self esteem. R. Feeling life is running away from you. Reliance on another.
Queen of Swords. Traditionally a widow, this woman is fiercely independent, quick witted, a great motivator, reliable but distant especially towards men. R. Sharp interfering woman, controlling and cold.
King of Swords. Strong and aloof gentleman. Single and happy that way, he is attractive, distant, determined, always just and fair. Authoritative. R. Harsh unjust man, cold-hearted and calculating. Hard.
Ace of Wands. New opportunity at work or home. New job. New task. R. Need for change and growth, need for mental stimulation.
2 of Wands. Good advice from someone experienced. Sharing of information. R. Need for supervision. Feeling of insecurity.
3 of Wands. Recognition for hard work and effort put in. Promotion. Leadership. R. Being overlooked and underestimated. Need for recognition.
4 of Wands. Being singled out for new challenges, others demonstrating faith in your abilities. Harmony. Teamwork. R. Disarray, being thrown in the deep end.
5 of Wands. Rising to the challenge. Overcoming obstacles. Ability. R. Stress, feeling the burden of new challenges. Worry.
6 of Wands. Acclaim and recognition. Success, accomplishment. R. Failure to complete task. Inner doubts. Lack of confidence.
7 of Wands. Chaos and disarray. Disorganization, need to pull together. R. Misguided individuals. Lack of teamwork. Laziness.
8 of Wands. Holiday or trip overseas. Time to relax and escape. R. Need for time away from home and work environment. Pressure.
9 of Wands. Crossing final barrier to happiness. Entering calm. Security. R. Overburdening oneself, more challenges and obstacles. Weariness.
10 of Wands. Being taken for granted. Overburdened. Overworked. Tired. R. Freedom from worry. Retirement. Release of pressure.
Page of Wands. Enthusiastic child. Normally full of energy but very untidy and messy. New work opportunities, will need polishing up and will take effort. R. Problems getting a new project off the ground. Delay and disarray.
Knight of Wands. Determined, strong individual, bit of a tearaway, and disorganized. Opportunity to better oneself at work, hard work and organization. R. Someone's relaxed attitude getting you down. Need for order.
Queen of Wands. Warm inviting lady. Outspoken but respected for honesty. Motivator. R. Cutting criticism. Short tempered and spiteful.
King of Wands. Hard working down to earth man. Reliable, honest and determined. R. Aggressive man, disorganized, untidy and unreliable.
Ace of Cups. Birth of a baby, or project you would term your baby. New love. R. Need for new passion and love in life. Stagnation.
Two of Cups. Celebration in love. Marriage or engagement. Destined Love. R. Delay of wedding. Unforeseen problems for couple.
Three of Cups. Birth or conception of a child. Celebration of blessed new life. R. Problems conceiving a child. Too much pressure to conceive.
Four of Cups. Gossip and speculation about love. Jealousy not based in truth. R. Someone trying to undermine your relationship. Deception.
Five of Cups. Level headed in love. Making best of situation. Fear of abandonment. R. Unfounded despair and worry, fear of bubble bursting. Six of Cups. Need to let go of the past and move onward. Nostalgia. Daydreaming. R. Tears and sorrow, inability to walk away form negative situation.
Seven of Cups. Inability to be optimistic. Hoping and praying for heartfelt desire. R. Abandonment of plans in face of uncertainty. Loss and heartache.
Eight of Cups. Walking away from pain and old suffering. Release. Freedom R. Domination. Insecurities preventing advancement. Self loathing.
Nine of Cups. A couple for whom more blessings are on the way. Nearing satisfaction. R. Celebration of love that is in some way incomplete or not honest.
Ten of Cups. Love, Joy Happiness Abundance, Contentment. Wedding celebrations. R. Outward happiness, but some inner turmoil. Insecurities.
Page of Cups. Loving and gentle child. Bringing love and warmth to heart. New as yet untried opportunities for love to blossom in life. R. Feeling of dependency being trapped in a situation. Obligated.
Knight of Cups. Young enthusiastic loving person. Someone who makes you live! An opportunity or invitation in love, can only make you happy. R. An invitation from someone who will deceive you.
Queen of Cups. Warm hearted, gentle, good friend and mother. Good balance. R. A clingy lady who needs constant reassurance, lack of confidence.
King of Cups. Good friend, kind and true, a Gentleman. Lover, Husband. R. A weak clingy man who seeks to control through insecurity.
Ace of Coins. New financial opportunities. New lease of life a clean slate. R. Money problems, need to be resolved. Restrictions.
Two of Coins. Good financial balance, good flow in and out and some left. R. Money is tight at the moment and great care is needed.
Three of Coins. Cash injection. Earning your own money and feeling proud. R. Need for outside help financially. Spending too much.
Four of Coins. Money problems of your own making. Need to save now. R. Feeling of loss and hopelessness in finances. No win.
Five of Coins. Need for financial secrecy. Someone trying to fleece you? R. Be bold be brave take a chance, you may stumble on a winner.
Six of Coins. Applying for a loan or some other investment for the future. R. Someone calling in their debts, need to pay back dues.
Seven of Coins. Someone wanting to invest in you. Windfall. Investment. R. Need to attract investors or financial help needed.
Eight of Coins. Being left alone to earn to your potential, no one to interfere. R. Constant interference financially both earning and spending.
Nine of Coins. Financial security. Stability and self worth. Confidence. R. Need to check spending, someone else interfering.
Ten of Coins. True balance and stability financially. Family security. R. Small cash flow problems soon to be resolved.
Page of Coins. Generous child, giving, affectionate, sharing, loving. New opportunities to make some extra cash. R. Unexpected expenses, family related expense.
Knight of Coins. Enthusiastic ideas person. Job or money making opportunist. New opportunities to make money for the eager and energetic. R. Beware of offers that seem too good to be true. They are.
Queen of Coins. A generous lady who spends far too much on others. R. A selfish lady who doesn’t want to part with her cash.
King of Coins. A benefactor or someone in control of your money flow. R. A con man. Egocentric and deceitful. |
